A magnitude-4.7 earthquake shook Southern California early Thursday with the epicenter located just north of Malibu. The quake, originally recorded at a magnitude of 5.1, struck at 7:28 a.m. affecting widespread regions from the coast to inland areas. Residents reported feeling the tremor in Malibu, Hermosa Beach, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Hills and as far as the San Fernando Valley. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately seven miles, increasing the likelihood of widespread shaking being felt across the region.
Aftershocks and Ongoing Precautions- Malibu Earthquake
Following the initial earthquake, several aftershocks ranging from 1.8 to 3.4 magnitudes were recorded. Seismologists predict that additional aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days. Despite the intensity of the tremors, there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage. However as a precaution, trains on the Los Angeles Metro system were slowed to assess any potential damage, adhering to standard post-earthquake safety protocols.
Recent Seismic Activity Raises Preparedness Concerns- California Earthquake
This earthquake is one of several that have struck Southern California in recent weeks. A 5.2 magnitude quake hit south of Bakersfield not long ago, further highlighting the region’s seismic vulnerability. Dr. Lucy Jones, a renowned seismologist, emphasized that while recent quakes have been small and non-damaging, they serve as a stark reminder of the region’s seismic risks. She noted-“The quiet of the last couple of decades is not our long-term picture” urging Californians to remain vigilant and prepared for potential future seismic events.
With the increasing frequency of earthquakes in the region, experts continue to encourage residents to review their emergency plans and stay alert for any future tremors.
